The Village contracts with The Roy Strom Collection Company (Strom: 708-344-5000- Press 0 to speak with an attendant) for its solid waste collection. All households receive standard service which provides for weekly refuse collection of up to two cans of refuse, and unlimited recycling by use of one 32-gallon container and/or 18 gallon bins.
If you experience a missed refuse, recycling or yard waste collection, please contact Strom at 708-344-5000 (press 0). Should Strom fail to resolve your problem, contact the Village or call 708-366-8500.

Collection is provided on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The 3-day collection schedule (click here to view map) is described as follows:
Monday: West side of Harlem Ave through and including both sides of Monroe Ave between Central Ave and North Ave, and the east side of Jackson Ave between Oak Ave and Chicago Ave.Tuesday: Both sides of Jackson Ave (except for the east side of Jackson Ave between Oak Ave and Chicago Ave) through and including both sides of Park Ave between Central Ave and North Ave, and the west side of Park Ave through and including the east side of Thatcher Ave between Division St and North Ave.Wednesday: Both sides of Forest Ave through and including the west side of River Oaks Dr between Central Ave and Division St, and the east side of Lathrop Ave through and including the west side of Thatcher Ave between Madison St and Hawthorne Ave.
Strom will provide collection services on Thursdays and Fridays for missed locations and for special pickups.
Strom observes the following holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July
- Labor Day
- Christmas Day
Collection on these holidays will be scheduled for the next working day and subsequent collections during that week will be delayed by one day.
The Village's refuse collection program offers two options:
Base Service: Provides for the weekly collection of up to two cans of refuse or building materials. The can of building materials must not exceed 50 lbs. in weight and cannot be generated by a contractor. Residents can dispose of more than two containers of refuse or building materials when they purchase and affix a Universal Solid Waste Tag to each additional container(s).The bi monthly fee for Base Service is $53.28.
Optional Special Service: Provides for the weekly collection of unlimited refuse and no more than one container of building materials without having to affix a Universal Solid Waste Tag to additional containers. Contact the Village at (708) 366-8500 if you are interested in participating in this option.The bi monthly fee for Special Service is $79.02.
Regardless of which collection option you have, all refuse containers cannot exceed 33 gallons in capacity, can weigh up to 50 pounds when loaded, and be collected from a location at the back door or at a location outside and behind the front building line of the residence or next to the alley (for those residences with alleys). Containers shall have tight-fitting lids, and oversized and/or overweight containers will not be collected.
The Village provides single-family and multi-family structures (three units or less) the opportunity to recycle under the Village's recycling program. In this program, residents are provided with one 32-gallon container, and may use unlimited additional containers, and can discard the materials listed below into these containers. Containers are to be placed at the "Top-of-the-Drive" location, which is a point on or immediately adjacent to the driveway near the front building line of your residence.
Village Ordinance requires that all multi-family buildings not served under the Village's program institute a recycling program. If your multi-family complex does not currently provide a recycling program, please contact the Public Works Department for assistance in implementing such a program.
Don't Throw Away Your Electronics... Recycle Them!
The State of Illinois has mandated that, effective January 1, 2012, certain electronics may no longer be disposed of in landfills. Therefore, beginning January 1, River Forest residents will no longer be able to place any of the following electronic products in their refuse or recycling for disposal:
- Computer monitors
- Printers and scanners
- Computers (including tablet computers)
- Keyboards and other computer components (mice, speakers, etc)
- Facsimile machines
- VCRs and DVD players
- Portable digital music players
- CD Players and stereo components
- Video game consoles
- Small scale servers
- Digital converter boxes, cable and satellite receivers
- Cell Phones
- Cordless Phones
The Village is not currently offering electronics recycling services.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency provides a comprehensive list of registered residential electronic waste collection sites by clicking here. Consumers can also contact electronic device retailers for information about other recycling programs that may be available from time to time.
The Village offers a year-round bulk item collection and disposal program. Universal Solid Waste Tags are to be affixed to each item and placed next to your garbage cans for collection on the same day as your regular refuse collection - in accordance with the following schedule:
Affix one (1) Universal Solid Waste Tag to each non-hazardous municipal solid waste item no longer than 4’, no wider than 4’, and weighing 50 pounds or less.
Affix five (5) Universal Solid Waste Tags to each large, bulk, or “white good” item. Examples include hot water tanks 75 gallon size or less; stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezer appliances, etc. weighing no more than 150 pounds; hide-a-beds; and large house hold furniture items weighing no more than 150 pounds.
Affix ten (10) Universal Solid Waste Tags to each oversize, bulk, or “white good” item. Examples include hot water tanks larger than 75 gallon or weighing more than 150 pounds and stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezer appliances, and large household furniture/items weighing more than 150 pounds.
Items not eligible for the bulk item disposal program include tires, auto batteries, explosives, hazardous waste, motor-oil, liquids/fluids, carpeting, etc. To schedule a special pick-up contact Rom Strom directly at (708) 344-5000.
Residents may set out yard waste (which commonly includes grass, leaves, and shrubbery cuttings) and bundles of brush/branches for collection. Specially printed River Forest Universal Solid Waste Tags, which can be purchased at the Village Hall and at area retailers, must be affixed to paper yard waste bags and bundles of brush prior to collection. Program details are as follows:
- Yard waste must be set out for collection curbside no earlier than 6:00pm the night before collection (Monday) and no later than 7:00am on collection day (Tuesday).
- Yard waste will be collected on Tuesdays at curbside (in the parkway immediately behind the curb). Yard waste should not be placed in the street. Exception: All yard waste generated at residential locations receiving alley service will be collected at the edge of the alley in a clearly visible location - not located behind gates, fences, or other structures at the time of collection.
- Properly prepared paper yard waste bags shall not exceed 32 gallons in capacity or 50 pounds in weight. Brush/branches may be set out in bundles - individual branches are not to exceed 4 feet in length or 4 inches in diameter, and each bundle is not to exceed 50 pounds in weight.
- The yard waste collection season begins the first Tuesday after April 1st and runs through the first Tuesday in December.
The Village's annual "Rake to the Street" leaf pick-up program, is unlimited and free, and runs from September 19th through November 30th. Rake only leaves onto the street, leaving the curb exposed, where Village crews will collect them. Please don't mix grass clippings, brush or any other type of yard waste with your leaves (please advise your lawn care service). Village crews will collect leaves only, beginning around 7:00 a.m. Please coordinate your lawn maintenance according to the following leaf collection schedule (click here to view map):
Mondays: The area west of Thatcher including Edgewood, Auvergne, River Oaks and Lake, and all streets south of the Union Pacific Rail Road tracks.
Tuesdays: Harlem through and including William
Wednesdays: Monroe through and including Lathrop, north of the Union Pacific Railroad
Thursdays: Ashland through and including Park, north of the Union Pacific Railroad
Fridays: Forest through and including Thatcher, north of the Union Pacific Railroad
Universal Solid Waste Tags are sold at $2.75 each and are available at the Village Hall and at the following area retailers:
