2012 Street Improvement Program
The Village’s annual Street Improvement Program (SIP) is designed to maintain and improve the condition of our streets. The SIP consists of various maintenance functions such as patching, crack sealing, and micro-surfacing on an as-needed basis throughout the Village as well as more comprehensive improvements to selected streets.
The more comprehensive repaving projects fall into three categories:
Reconstruction: Involves the complete replacement of the curbs and gutters as well as needed repairs to manholes, drainage structures, fire hydrants, etc. The surface of the existing pavement is milled off and replaced with a base layer and a surface layer of hot mix asphalt.
Resurfacing: Involves all of the above except that the curb replacement is intermittent, replacing only those sections of curbs that are in poor condition.
Rehabilitation: Involves the same work as resurfacing except that milling of the existing pavement is done to replace the surface layer only and not the base layer. This process is used on streets where damage to the pavement is mostly contained in the surface layer.
Micro-Surfacing: A cost effective way to prolong pavement life and provide a safe traveling surface. The project consists of applying a durable, asphalt seal to roads that have started to show signs of aging and moderate distress. The process helps slow the natural breakdown of the existing road surface and helps extend the lifespan of the road by several years.
The following streets are scheduled for resurfacing in 2012:
- Ashland from Madison to Hawthorne
- Forest from Madison to Washington
- Park from Chicago to Augusta
- Clinton from Central to Lake
The following streets are scheduled for rehabilitation:
- Iowa from Harlem to Dead end
The following streets are scheduled for micro-surfacing:
- Park Ave from Madison to Washington
- Park Dr from Park Ave to Franklin Ave
- Vine St from Park Ave to Lathrop
It is anticipated that work will start early to mid summer of 2012. Property owners adjacent to these projects will be notified in advance of the start of each project. If you have questions regarding these projects, please contact Public Works or call 708-366-8500.
Water Main Improvement Program
The Village's water main improvement program replaces aging and detoriorating water system infrastructure. A typical water main project involves an open trench installation of the new water and the transfer of all fire hydrants and private water services to the new main before the old main is abandoned. This will result in temporary water shut-offs for homes near a main improvement program.
The 2012 water main project will be:
- Washington from Lathrop to Ashland
Sewer Relining Program
The sewer relining program takes place Village-wide and is intended to improve the Village's sewer system and prevent costly repairs due to failing mains. Sewers are evaluated on an annual basis and those in the worst condition are relined by inserting a sleeve made of flexible material into the existing pipe. The sleeve is then filled with water and heated to a high temperature for curing and hardening. This process provides the existing failing pipes with the structural support needed to continue their service.
Sewer relining is non-inasive and most residents will not even be aware that sewers on their streets have been lined.
Sidewalk Replacement Program
The Village will share the cost (50% resident, 50% Village) to remove and replace defective and unsafe public sidewalks as part of our annual 50-50 Sidewalk Replacement Program. Residents interested in replacing their driveway apron, on the public right-of-way only, can do so at 100% cost to the resident. The public sidewalk and apron replacement costs are secured through a competitive bid process during the spring.
If you have a section of public sidewalk adjacent to your property that needs replacing, and/or to schedule the replacement of your driveway apron, contact the Village or call 708-366-8500 during the months of March/April/May of each year. If you choose to replace your driveway apron along with sections of public sidewalk, please provide us with this information concurrently.
