Vehicle Sticker Citation Mailing Program
Over the next several weeks, the River Forest Police Department will be sending out approximately 600 mailings to residents advising them that they are being cited for violating Title 9, Chapter 1, Section 1, of the local ordinance for failing to purchase a vehicle sticker. The Village Code requires that "The owner of any motor vehicle with a current state license and registered to a village address or any resident who applies for a village parking permit shall be required to obtain and display a village license. This also applies to motor vehicles temporarily not in operating condition or intermittently garaged outside of the village."
These mailings, created by comparing information obtained from the Illinois Secretary of State's vehicle databases, as well as village databases, inform the addressee that they are in violation of the Village's ordinance, and a citation for violating the ordinance. The letter specifies the cost of the sticker, late fee, and the fine for the citation.
Any person who receives this citation and notification has these options available to them:
1. Pay the citation, sticker fee and late fee in person at the village hall, by mail, or by clicking here to visit the Village's online vehicle sticker payment center.
2. Contest the citation by attending the designated administrative adjudication hearing date and presenting their defense to the adjudication officer.
Any citation not paid in full or dismissed by the adjudication officer will be subject to increasing fines, as well as being sent to a collection agency to obtain payment.
Chief of Police Gregory A. Weiss states "To comply with the Village Code, stickers had to have been purchased by July 14, 2011. Since that time, we have sent several mailings requesting compliance with the Code, and have also had village staff personally visit as many of the residences on our violation list as possible in order to obtain voluntary compliance with the ordinance. Our final alternative is to begin issuing citations to those residents that have not yet purchased a 2011-12 vehicle sticker."
If a resident feels that they have received a citation in error (such as the vehicle no longer is registered to an address in the village or the vehicle no longer is owned by the resident) they may contact the village at (708) 366-8500.
