Refuse Collection
The Village's refuse collection program offers two options:

Base Service: Provides for the weekly collection of up to two cans of refuse or building materials. The can of building materials must not exceed 50 lbs. in weight and cannot be generated by a contractor. Residents can dispose of more than two containers of refuse or building materials when they purchase and affix a Universal Solid Waste Tag to each additional container(s).

Optional Special Service: Provides for the weekly collection of unlimited refuse and no more than one container of building materials without having to affix a Universal Solid waste Tag to additional containers. Contact the Village at (708) 366-8500 if you are interested in participating in this option.

Regardless of which collection option you have, all refuse containers cannot exceed 33 gallons in capacity, can weigh up to 50 pounds when loaded, and be collected from a location at the back door or at a location outside and behind the front building line of the residence or next to the alley (for those residences with alleys). Containers shall have tight-fitting lids, and oversized and/or overweight containers will not be collected.

Refuse collection on the following days shall be rescheduled for the first working day after: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Recycling Program
The Village provides single-family and multi-family structures (three units or less) the opportunity to recycle under the Villages recycling program. In this program, residents are provided with two 18-gallon recycling bins and can discard the materials listed below into these bins. These bins are to be placed at the "Top-of-the-Drive" location, which is a point on or immediately adjacent to the driveway near the front building line of your residence.

Village Ordinance requires that all multi-family buildings not served under the Villages program institute anon-site recycling program. If your multi-family complex does not currently provide a recycling program, please contact the Public Works Department for assistance in implementing such a program.

The following is a review of what materials may be placed in the recycling bins and how they should be prepared for collection:

  • Newspaper: Place loosely in the container, not bagged, bundled or tied.
  • Magazines and Catalogs: This includes slick (shiny) paper only. These materials should be bundled or placed in a brown bag and set in the same recycling container used for newspaper.
  • Mixed Paper: Industry computer paper, junk mail, etc. - include with newspaper.
  • Corrugated Cardboard: Only flattened cardboard containers will be collected, and should be cut into pieces no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet. Cardboard containers may be placed loose in the recycling containers, although pieces too large should be placed flat on the ground with the container placed over them.
  • Chipboard: Consists of non-corrugated cardboard such as cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and beverage container cartons should be flattened and put into brown paper bags, and placed inside the recycling container. Cardboard lined with wax paper and coated packaging intended for freezer storage cannot be accepted.
  • Phone Books: May be placed loose inside the recycling bin along with the newspapers.
  • Aluminum, tin food and beverage cans: Rinsed with labels removed. Cans may be crushed to save space.
  • Empty Paint and Aerosol Cans
  • Glass: Clear and colored glass bottles and jars are acceptable. Containers should be rinsed with lids discarded (labels can be left on). Window glass, ceramics, Pyrex, and other non-container glass cannot be accepted.
  • Plastic: All containers labeled #1 through #7. Resin labels can be found on the bottom of plastic containers. Two-liter beverage bottles, milk and water jugs, laundry product containers, dairy product containers, etc. are acceptable and should be rinsed and crushed. Automotive fluids and motor oil containers are not recyclable.
