2010 Street Improvement Program (SIP)

The Village’s annual Street Improvement Program (SIP) includes repaving projects designed to improve and maintain the condition of our streets. Included in this project is an asphalt patching program at various locations throughout the Village.

The repaving projects fall into two categories. The first category, which is termed a reconstruction project, involves the complete replacement of curbs and gutters as well as needed repairs on manholes, drainage structures, fire hydrants, etc. The surface of the existing pavement is milled off and replaced with a new layer of hot mix asphalt. The second category, termed a resurfacing project, involves all of the above except that curb replacement is intermittent, replacing only those sections of curbs that are in poor condition.

The following street is being proposed for reconstruction:

  • Bonnie Brae from Augusta Street to Thomas Street

The following streets are being proposed for resurfacing:

  • Thomas Street from Bonnie Brae to Harlem Avenue
  • Park Avenue from Augusta Street to Division Street
  • Keystone Avenue from Madison Street to Hawthorne Avenue
  • Forest Avenue form Hawthorne Avenue to Cul-De-Sac
  • Linden Street from Keystone Avenue to Forest Avenue
  • Vine Street from Gale Avenue to Keystone Avenue

It is anticipated that work will start mid-summer and will extend into early fall. Property owners adjacent to these projects will be notified in advance of the start of each project. If you have questions regarding these projects, please contact Public Works at (708) 366-8500.

Park Avenue Water Main Project

This project consists of replacing an old 4-inch water main beneath Park Avenue, from Augusta Street to Division Street, with a new 8-inch water main this summer. This project will include several new fire hydrants to improve water flow and fire protection capabilities. The work will begin early this summer and will be followed by the resurfacing of Park Avenue, from Augusta Street to Division Street, as part of this year Street Improvement Project.

Crack Sealing, Micro-surfacing, and Thermoplastic Marking Project

This street maintenance project consists of a combination of crack sealing/repairing, micro-surfacing, and lane markings at various locations throughout the Village. This work is scheduled to begin late summer or early fall.

Lake Street Improvement Project

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has scheduled a resurfacing project for Lake Street from Harlem Avenue to 1st Avenue (Maywood). This project consists of milling of existing asphalt pavement, hot-mix asphalt replacement, intermittent curb and gutter replacement (replacing only those sections of curbs that are in poor condition), drainage structure reconstruction, detector loop replacement, thermoplastic pavement marking, raised reflective pavement markers, and any collateral or incidental work necessary to complete the project. This project is expected to be completed in the fall. We will provide additional information on the status of this project as it becomes available.

Sidewalk Replacement Program

The Village will share the cost (50% resident, 50% Village) to remove and replace defective and unsafe public sidewalks as part of our annual 50-50 Sidewalk Replacement Program. Residents interested in replacing their driveway apron, on public right-of-way only, can do so at 100% cost to the resident. The public sidewalk and apron replacement costs are secured through a competitive bid process during the spring and communicated to our residents in the spring Village newsletter.

If you have a section of public sidewalk adjacent to your property that needs replacing, and/or to schedule the replacement of your driveway apron, contact the Village at (708) 366-8500 during the months of March/April/May of each year. If you choose to replace your driveway apron along with sections of public sidewalk, please provide us with this information concurrently.
